- Time and date of your visit, time spent on pages, and click patterns.
- Device identifiers and, where permitted, approximate geolocation data (country/region level) used to serve regionally relevant content.
c) Cookies and Tracking Technologies
We use cookies and similar tracking technologies to enhance your experience and analyse traffic. Specifically:
- Essential Cookies: Required for the platform to function (e.g., session management, login state, anti-fraud fingerprinting).
- Analytics Cookies: We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors interact with our site. This data is aggregated and anonymised. You may opt out via Google Analytics Opt-Out.
- Advertising Cookies: We may work with third-party advertising networks to display promotional content on the platform. These networks may use cookies to deliver contextually relevant ads. We do not permit interest-based behavioural advertising directed at users we know to be under 18 years of age.
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, we are required to identify a lawful basis for processing your personal data. We rely on the following bases:
- Consent: Where you have freely given, specific, informed, and unambiguous consent — for example, when creating an account, submitting a contest entry, or receiving marketing communications. You may withdraw consent at any time.
- Contract Performance: Processing necessary to fulfil our obligations when you use our services — for example, managing your account, processing contest entries, or handling payments.
- Legitimate Interests: Where processing is necessary for our legitimate business interests, provided those interests are not overridden by your data protection rights — for example, fraud detection, platform security, and platform analytics.
- Legal Obligation: Where we are required to process your data to comply with applicable Nigerian law or respond to lawful government or court orders.
- Parental/Guardian Consent: For users aged 16 or 17, we require confirmed parental or guardian consent before processing their personal data, in line with NDPA 2023 provisions on children's data.
We use the information we collect strictly for the following purposes:
- To operate, maintain, and improve our platform and services.
- To enable you to create contests, submit entries, and vote.
- To personalise your platform experience based on your activity and preferences.
- To send transactional communications (e.g., account confirmation, password reset, contest updates).
- To send marketing communications where you have opted in — you may opt out at any time.
- To display contextually relevant advertising content through our advertising partners.
- To detect, prevent, and address fraud, abuse, vote manipulation, or security incidents.
- To comply with applicable legal obligations and enforce our Terms and Conditions.
- To conduct internal analytics and improve platform performance.
We will not use your personal data for any purpose incompatible with the purpose for which it was originally collected, without your prior consent.
We do not sell your personal information to any third party. We may share your information only in the following limited circumstances:
- With Your Consent: When you have explicitly agreed to share your information.
- Service Providers: Trusted third-party vendors who perform services on our behalf, including cloud hosting (Render.com), media storage (Cloudinary), payment processing (Paystack), and email delivery. These parties are contractually obligated to protect your data and use it only for the specific services they provide to us.
- Analytics Providers: Google Analytics receives aggregated, anonymised data about site usage.
- Advertising Networks: Where advertising is displayed on the platform, our ad network partners may receive non-personally identifiable usage data (such as approximate location and browsing context) to serve relevant ads. No personally identifiable information is shared with advertisers.
- Legal Requirements: If required by law, court order, or a lawful directive from a Nigerian governmental authority, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of ShowUs, our users, or the public.
- Business Transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to equivalent data protection obligations.
a) Minimum Age and Consent
- ShowUs is not directed at children under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16.
- Users aged 16 or 17 may use the platform only with the explicit prior consent of a parent or legal guardian. By registering, a minor and/or their parent or guardian affirms that such consent has been given.
- Where ShowUs partners with schools or educational institutions (e.g., for inter-school contests), we require a written confirmation from the school that it has obtained the necessary parental consent on behalf of all participating students.
- If we discover that a user is under 16 without parental consent, we will immediately suspend that account and delete the associated personal data.
b) Data Minimisation for Minors
For users aged 16 or 17, we collect only the minimum data necessary for participation. This is typically limited to:
- First name and surname (or a chosen username)
- School name and year/grade (for school-based contests)
- Email address (for account creation — a parental email is recommended)
- Contest entry content (photo, YouTube video link, or text)
We do not collect home addresses, personal phone numbers, or national identity numbers from users aged 16 or 17.
c) Parental and Guardian Rights
Parents and legal guardians of users aged 16 or 17 have the following rights, exercisable at any time by contacting our Data Protection Liaison at showus25@gmail.com:
- Right to Review: To request a summary of all personal data we hold about their child.
- Right to Rectify: To correct any inaccurate data held about their child.
- Right to Erasure: To request the deletion of their child's account and all associated personal data at any time.
- Right to Object: To object to or withdraw consent for the continued processing of their child's data at any time.
- Right to Refuse Further Collection: To instruct us to stop collecting any further data about their child, which will result in account deactivation.
- Right to Restrict Processing: To request that we limit how we use their child's data pending review.
We will action all legitimate parental or guardian requests within 30 days of receipt.
d) No Behavioural Advertising to Minors
We will never use personal data belonging to users aged 16 or 17 for interest-based or behavioural advertising purposes. We will never sell, licence, or transfer that data to any third-party advertiser.
e) Content Safety
ShowUs enforces strict content moderation to protect minor users from exposure to harmful, explicit, or age-inappropriate content on the platform.
Contest entries, usernames, vote counts, and profile information you choose to make public on ShowUs are visible to all visitors, including users who are not logged in. Please exercise caution about what personal information you include in public content, particularly if you are a minor. ShowUs is not responsible for how other users or third parties use information you voluntarily make public.
We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide our services. If you delete your account, we will delete or anonymise your personal data within a reasonable period (typically within 30 days), except where retention is required by law or for legitimate business interests (e.g., fraud prevention, unresolved disputes).
For users aged 16 or 17, data retention periods will be minimised, and we will proactively review and purge data that is no longer required for the purpose for which it was collected.
We implement industry-standard technical, administrative, and physical safeguards — including HTTPS encryption, secure database access controls, restricted staff access, and regular security reviews — to protect your personal data from unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.
However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your data, we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your login credentials and for notifying us promptly at showus25@gmail.com if you suspect any unauthorised access.
Data Breach Notification: In the event of a personal data breach that is likely to result in a risk to your rights and freedoms, ShowUs will notify the relevant supervisory authority and affected users in accordance with the requirements of the NDPA 2023 and without undue delay.
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, you have the following rights in relation to your personal data:

- Right of Access: To request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Right to Rectification: To request correction of any inaccurate or incomplete personal data.
- Right to Erasure ("Right to be Forgotten"): To request deletion of your personal data where it is no longer necessary, or where consent has been withdrawn.
- Right to Data Portability: To request that your data be provided to you in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format.
- Right to Object: To object to processing based on legitimate interests, including direct marketing.
- Right to Restrict Processing: To request that we temporarily limit how we use your data in certain circumstances.
- Right to Withdraw Consent: Where processing is based on consent, to withdraw that consent at any time without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing.
To exercise any of these rights, please contact our Data Protection Liaison at showus25@gmail.com. We will respond to all legitimate requests within 30 days. There is no fee for exercising these rights.
If you believe we have failed to handle your personal data in accordance with the NDPA 2023, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) at ndpc.gov.ng.
ShowUs is operated from Nigeria. If you access our platform from outside Nigeria, please be aware that your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in Nigeria or other countries where our service providers operate — including the United States (Render.com, Cloudinary) and the European Union.
Under the NDPA 2023, personal data may only be transferred outside Nigeria to countries that provide an adequate level of data protection, or where appropriate safeguards are in place. Where our service providers are located in countries not designated as adequate by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) or other legal mechanisms approved by the NDPC to ensure your data receives equivalent protection.
By using our platform, you acknowledge and consent to the transfer and processing of your data as described above, subject to these safeguards.
Our platform may contain links to third-party websites, contest sponsors, or social media platforms. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party sites you visit, particularly before sharing any personal information with them.
We may update this Privacy Policy periodically to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or other factors. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you by email or through a notice on the platform. Your continued use of ShowUs after any posted changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with any changes, you must stop using the platform.
